DBT Skills Training

DBT Skills Training is a structured, 24–28-week curriculum in which adults learn practical, evidence-based tools for managing intense emotions, improving relationships, and reducing impulsive behaviors.

This is not traditional group therapy. It serves as the skills-training component of Comprehensive DBT and follows a structured curriculum focused on learning and practicing specific skills — not on sharing personal stories.

The way you respond, moment by moment, shapes the life you’re building

What You Learn

01

Core Mindfulness

Bringing awareness to the present moment rather than getting pulled into past regrets or future worries.

02

Interpersonal Effectiveness

Navigating relationships with more clarity, confidence, and balance.

03

Emotion Regulation

Understanding and managing emotions so they don’t drive behavior.

04

Distress Tolerance

Getting through difficult moments without making things worse.

Is This Right for You?

DBT Skills Training may be a good fit for you:

  • Experience rapid mood shifts
  • Struggle with impulsive reactions
  • Have recurring conflicts in relationships
  • Notice patterns of emotion dysregulation that feel hard to change

DBT Skills Training is designed for adults who are willing to actively practice new skills and work toward meaningful behavioral change.

What's Required

DBT Skills Training requires a genuine commitment to the process.  The requirements below are in place because they support your success – and the success of the group.

DBT Skills Training requires a genuine commitment to the process.  The requirements below are in place because they support your success – and the success of the group.

Skills training works best when participants complete one full 24-28 week cycle.  This allows time to learn, practice, and integrate all four skills modules.

Consistent attendance is essential.  Regular participation supports your own progress and the continuity of the group.

Skills are built through practice between sessions – not just during them. Weekly assignments are a core part of the learning process.

Concurrent individual therapy is required. This may be with Kari Barker, Lauren Caravello, or with an outside provider when coordination of care is possible.

An initial consultation is required before joining to determine whether DBT Skills Training is a good fit – and when it is, a brief orientation sets the stage for joining the group at the start of the next module.
